Parents Supporting Parents: Finding Your Footing When Your Child Comes Out

Written by on December 1, 2025

Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in Naperville, Youth Outlook’s Thrive program brings caregivers together for practical, affirming peer support.

Most parents or caregivers of LGBTQ+ young people have the same goal: be supportive. The hard part is figuring out what that looks like. That’s where community can make all the difference.

Why Thrive matters right now

When an LGBTQ+ young person comes out, or when a family is navigating name/pronoun changes, school stress, or extended family dynamics, caregivers often feel pressure to “get it right” immediately. But even supportive adults can feel isolated, unsure of language, or overwhelmed by questions they didn’t expect.

Youth Outlook exists because no family should have to navigate that alone. Since 1998, Youth Outlook has supported LGBTQ+ youth and their families across northern and central Illinois with affirming services designed to meet evolving needs.

Thrive is one piece of that wider network, part of the kind of Illinois LGBTQ youth services that help young people flourish by strengthening the adults around them.

What Thrive is (and what it isn’t)

Thrive is peer support with professional facilitation. It’s a place to share experiences, swap strategies, and learn together in an affirming environment. It’s not therapy or clinical counseling, and it’s not about being a “perfect” parent. It’s about being a present one.

That distinction matters. Caregivers come to Thrive for community and tools: how to respond in the moment, what to say when relatives push back, how to advocate at school, and how to support mental health in everyday ways at home. Plus, like all of Youth Outlook’s programs, there is no cost to attend.

The topics families actually want to talk about

Because Thrive is shaped by real caregiver questions, the conversations stay grounded and practical. Recent sessions have focused on:

  • Coming out responses: what helps, what hurts, and what to do if your first response wasn’t what you wish it had been
  • Pronoun usage: how to practice, how to repair mistakes, and how to support a young person’s identity consistently
  • School advocacy: talking with teachers, counselors, and administrators; navigating forms, names, and privacy
  • Extended family reactions: setting boundaries, handling holidays, and finding language that protects your young person
  • Supporting mental health: building connection, noticing stress signals, and helping your child feel safe and seen

For many caregivers, this is what they’ve been searching for: something that feels human, accessible, and steady.

Impact you can feel in 90 minutes

Because Thrive meets consistently and stays focused on real-life situations, caregivers often describe leaving with both relief and a plan. That’s the heart of a safe space for LGBTQ youth, not only for young people, but for the caregivers who are learning, adjusting, and showing up alongside them.

Youth Outlook’s values include harm reduction and honoring confidentiality, helping create spaces where participants can be real about what’s hard while staying grounded in safety and respect. Thrive carries that spirit into a room where caregivers can ask questions they may not feel comfortable asking anywhere else.

What’s next and how to join

Thrive will continue meeting on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 7:00–8:30 PM in Naperville, welcoming parents, foster parents, guardians, and full-time caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth ages 12-25. Email thrive@youth-outlook.org for details and location. If you’re new, take comfort in knowing you don’t need to have it all figured out. You can come to listen, learn, and take one step at a time.

For parents of LGBTQ+ children in grades K–6 seeking support, try our Rainbow Sprouts program, which meets every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 1:00–3:00 PM in Aurora.
