NAPERVILLE, Ill., September 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ – Youth Outlook, Illinois’ first and longest-running social services agency dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth, announced today a historic leadership transition on its Board of Directors, naming Emily S. as board chair and Ceci B. as vice chair. For the first time in the organization’s history, both roles will be held by individuals who previously participated in Youth Outlook programs as youth.

Emily and Ceci bring lived experience, community connection, and long-term commitment to Youth Outlook’s mission as the organization marks more than 25 years of statewide service. Their leadership reflects Youth Outlook’s long-standing focus on youth voice, including opportunities for young people to shape programs, community education, and organizational direction.

“As someone who found safety and community at Youth Outlook when I needed it, I’m honored to serve as board chair at a consequential time for our community,” Emily said. “Together with Ceci and the board, we’re going to meet this moment and make sure LGBTQ+ youth who come to Youth Outlook can find the same sense of safety, community, pride, and empowerment that I did.”

Ceci, who will serve as vice chair, said she is committed to strengthening Youth Outlook’s role as a consistent, affirming presence for LGBTQ+ young people across Illinois. “I’m stepping into this role to keep widening the circle of care,” Ceci said. “We’re focused on amplifying youth voice and protecting space where young people can grow, connect, and be themselves.”

“Youth lead and inform our work at all levels, and this board transition is a real example of that,” said Nancy Mullen, Executive Director of Youth Outlook. “Emily and Ceci know what it feels like to walk into our space looking for safety and leave with community. We’re grateful they’re bringing that lived experience into governance, and we’re grateful to every supporter who makes it possible for LGBTQ+ young people across Illinois to find us when they need us.”

Youth Outlook provides virtual and in-person programs statewide for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults ages 5-24, including Drop-In Centers for ages 12-24, Rainbow Sprouts for LGBTQ+ children in grades K-6 and their families, and caregiver support programs, including Thrive and Grandbeings. Youth Outlook’s Health and Wellness Navigation program supports LGBTQ+ young adults up to age 30. All Youth Outlook programs are available at no cost.
